I have just bought a house in Barrhaven (ON), and absolutly love it. It has 3 bed rooms, all upstairs. I need a 4th one soon. Can I build one on top of my garage? The roof slopes downwards with nothing but empty attic on top of the garage, or will it be cheaper for me to buy another house with a fourth bed room?

You answered your own question "absolutely love it". I'd build on top of the garage but do it with forethought. That room is liable to be cold unless you plan for it. Try this: About the only system that appears to alleviate this sort of situation is to lower the garage ceiling creating a crawl space. The walls and floor of this crawl space are heavily insulated and the area heated. This makes the space above comparable to the rest of the house as regards heat.
