Question:

My husband and I just bought a great new house. Only problem is the garage. The house sits on a 1300 sq foot lot. To take advantage of the views and to create more space, the builder went up. We have a basement and three stories. The 1 car garage is on the first floor and we having living space below it. The garage floor is not concrete, but wood. We were told they didn't use concrete because of the weight issue. We were also told though that it would be safe to park a car in there. We should first seal the floor though. We live in Seattle so we don't want to park in there until it's sealed because of all the rain. Do you have any ideas how we can do this ourselves?

Answer:

Actually, it will take more than just sealing because your insurance people will want confirmation that it was done right. The gasses eminating from a garage are not gasses you and your family want to be ingesting. There are of course, sealants that will do the job and a DIY-er can probably do them as efficiently and effectivly as a pro but when it comes to tinkering with your life, I don't know that that's a very good idea. Particularly when moisture becomes a concern (rain, etc.), wood is not really up to the job because no matter what is done with no matter what kind of wood, rot can set in and the seal you provided in the first place can end up sealing nothing but powder.
