We have lived in a house for about 20 years and are planning on putting it up for sale in the next couple of years. The house itself was built in the late 1940's and had a renovation/addition done to it in 1980. Is it a good idea for us to have the house inspected to see if there are any area's that should be addressed prior to putting the house on the market?
Answer:
If you are not yourself knowledgeable in the building trades, yes, it would be a good idea to have a 'pre-sale' inspection. You should also have on hand the details (drawings?) that were there for the addition. Copies of the inspection and the details of the addition should be made available to serious potential buyers. Its credibility that goes a long way toward purchaser comfort.
In the interests of retaining credibility and in fairness to all, I cannot recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.
Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
