I have an 100 acres near Lanark, Ontario with a house that was originally log built in 1891. It has a stone foundation and the main part of the basement is cement floor but the crawl spaces are dirt. There seems to be an occasional musty smell in the house and we can't prove it to the plumbing, or anywhere. I heard your show once speak of laying black plastic on the dirt floor. Is this correct?
Answer:
That is almost certainly where it's coming from and besides ventilating the crawl space, you'll have to cover the dirt with something like that. If you can get a hold of one, an old swimming pool liner works very well.
