We live in an older log house, 1 1/2 story, built around 1825. The walls on the interior are the exposed logs, and the exterior are covered with older wood siding, probably back to the 50's. There is no insulation or barrier between the outside logs and siding, and I would like to add some rigid insulation and tyvek. I want to remove the old siding, but when we were up in the attic we notice the attic walls are the actual siding, the log walls stop about 4 feet high on the upstairs' floor. Removing the siding will expose the attic, what do you do in these situations?
Answer:
You work more carefully and provide auxilliary support where needed. You might also think about cutting the siding at along the top at a given height, strapping the outside of the building and then adding insulationb before re-applying siding.
