Question:

We recently bought a second house. My daughter wants to buy it off of us when we get it done. It is about 60 years old.It is made of cinder block and brick. We believe there is no studs in the outside walls.(There are no electrical outlets on those walls either.)The walls are plastered, there are some cracks and we are fixing them. But the gas bill is very high.Is there anyway of insulating the walls? We understand there is R-19insulation in the ceiling. Any help you could give us would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:

For insulation, and electrical outlets as a byproduct, you can build a framed wall inside all the perimeter walls and insulate them. R-19 in the attic isn't really enough either so you might look at another R-30 or so there but be careful not to compromise soffit ventilation while you're at it.
