I would like to change the way my front entrance looks . Presently it has a dormer above the front door and it's supported by a 45 degree 2x4 's 1 each side. I like the look of colums that support dormer's over front door's. It give's the estate look. My situation/question : I have presently a floating 3 step concrete slab. If I were to convert to colums to support the dormer these colums would land on either side out by 3". Therefore if I were to put up cemented sides formed 8 " out concrete /below 6" sona tube below frost line /anchor the floating 3 step slab to the new concrete sides using 1/4 threaded rod etc. Would this work /solution ? I would do this work myself !
Answer:
The relocated posts would have to settle and that is not a good thing for the dormer. I'd rather replace the floatinag slab with a larger one and leave it alone for a couple of years before introducing the new support posts. The new slab would have to have proper footings - and again, they'd have to settle before I'd dare depend on them for longevity.
In the interests of retaining credibility that I worked several decades to establish and in fairness to all, I cannot comment on specific products, recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.
Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
