Question:

I have the bottom of an old Singer sewing machine (cast iron) that I plan to turn into a table by putting a piece of granite on it. I need to clean it up as it has been painted black and there are visible drips of paint as well as rust. As there are many nooks and crannys, a friend suggested I get it sandblasted (all the wood is removed) rather than me using a chemical and doing it manually. I am open to sandblasting it, just wondered if that was the cleanest and best approach? Would it hurt/compremise the metal?

Answer:

That is probably the best system around and it will not harm the metal. There are paint removers and air pressure systems too that would work but sand blasting is the normal way people do them.
