I have a 20 year old house that my wife and I are slowly upgrading. We have been in the house for years. The front door opens directly into the basement. We would like to put hardwood flooring and ceramic tiles down to form an entrance foyer. Problem is the existing 20 year old carpeting seems to be glued to the cement floor. Can I get this up? Can I put a sub-floor over it? If all else fails can I carpet over the existing carpet?
Answer:
There are rental companies in Kelowna, British Columbia and you can lease a tile chipper. It has a 9" blade that vibrates laterally and that will take off whatever you need removed from concrete. Actually, its been some years since I've used one but it took things down to where I was able to apply adhesive right behind it. That looks after that part of it but I don't know why, when the opportunity is there, more people are not laying in slate at entrances. There is no way I'd put in anything over the existing carpet.
