Question:

We own a four year old bungalow that suffered some damage to the shingles from the ice storm. The corners of about 15-20 shingles were broken off when a 4 inch thick sheet of ice was removed. The damage is spread across the roof rather than concentrated in one area. Is this a do-it-yourself job or should we hire a roofer? I have some limited experience in putting on shingles, but I have never patched a damaged roof. If this is a job that I can do myself, what are the steps that I need to follow to do the job right?

Answer:

A 2-inch putty knife will lift the tabs of the shingles that have not been damaged above the broken ones and you can prop them up while you remove whatever damaged portions you need to. You can have the replacement shingles ready and just nail them into place. Be careful when nailing so you don't damage the propped up segments. If you hire a pro, this is what he'll do.
