thanks for answering my question. also, one more thing, is it important to use a notched trowel then a regular trowel? i'm currently visiting overseas, and in a third world country that doesn't have the best hardware stores, and i've never seen notched trowels, only regular ones. so ren, would it make a difference?

Any form of notching is better than no notching at all so I'd go to the trouble of creating notches. Try the V shaped notch a quarter inch deep and quarter inch wide. It is more of a general purpose than anything else.
