Question:

I have a workshop approximately 22 x 18 with 8' ceilings in my basement. There are no windows. I use hand and electric tools. I have a workshop dust filter that moves 300 CFM and I also have a 1HP dust collection system that I hook directly to my planer, jointer and table saw when operating. I just purchased a 300 CFM bathroom type fan. I am not sure if its a good idea to install this or not. I have to cut a hole in the side of the sill plate header in the basement to install it. Will it be of any value to do this or am I wasting my time and money, Will I lose more heat than the value I gain from this. My aim is to make a negative pressure in the room when sanding to prevent dust from leaving the room.

Please advise, as I am just guessing at the way ahead.

Thank You.

Answer:

You may not have much choice if you plan to keep the dust out of the rest of the house. The heat loss from something like this is not enough to worry about but you might want to insulate the first four feet of duct for your own comfort.
