If I'm not mistaken, I can ask you a question about my "sow's ear" of a house and receive an expert answer. It sounds too good to be true! The house I live in never had a glorious past - (it was built about 90 years ago, I think) - it's always been a very humble place. It's wood-shingled on a stone foundation with a dirt basement. I need helpful hints on how to level the floors, which need to be covered with plywood and floor covering. Since they undulate in every direction I don't know how to find the highest point. I have looked in a number of reference books and can't find the information I need. I hope you can direct me.
Answer:
Try tying a string to the wall in a corner and stretching it to the opposite corner. Hang a small line level on it and if you walk around the room with the string tight, if you find that you have to raise the tied end a bit, do it. Within 5 minutes, you'll have found the highest spot and you can do you shimming and laying in from there.
