Can I apply marble tiles to my existing 40-year-old laminate countertop simply by washing it down with TSP and lightly sanding it to roughen it up? (It is still well adhered) If so, what type of mortar should I use? If not, do I remove the laminate (groan)? Or can I attach plywood (groan again)?
Answer:
The laminate will come off with an iron set to 'wool' and a sheet of paper under it. Following that, you should not have to apply underlayment in the way of plywood but go directly to the mortar/grout/adhesive recommended by your tile distributor.
