Question:

I'd like to ask you if there is any way to get rid of old paint from a wooden surface that has been varnished and sitting around for approx. 14 years. When the walls were originally painted the Painter allowed paint to get onto many of the wooden window and Door trim.I'd like to ask you if you could direct me towards finding some inexpensive scaffolding that can be put together using ( 2x4 's and flat sheets of plywood) or perhaps somekind of a system that can be purchased. The above mentioned scaffolding is required to paint the open wall section of a winding staircase (opening is approx 20' x 10').

Answer:

Completely removing paint from wood is all but out of the question but as close as I've seen anyone come to it was with a biodegradable wood wash that is available from your local paint (as opposed to everything) store. For painting the staircase, you'll probably be better off buying a ladder that will permit you to set it up on a staircase; the legs are adjustable and it works very well.
