Question:

My front hand rail is made of hard wood (I'm not a connoisseur of wood) and the finish is looking old, warn down and just dirty from many years of use. What can I do to bring back to it's somewhat new look?

Answer:

First things first, a soft cloth soaked in varsol will take away most of that. If you still feel you have to re-finish it, take off the old finish with a heat gun and scraper before you do.
