Expert Q
Question:
We have linoleum flooring in our kitchen - 18 years old and its a good quality lino. A section has bubbled up. The bubble is not continuous though there are several longitudinal bubbles. Has the upper portion of the flooring separated from the bottom section? Can this be repaired by penetrating the bubble and inserting glue into the separated section or some other way?
Answer:
You should be able to feel through the bubbled section whether it is the wood that has bubbled or the backing of the vinyl separated. Whichever it is, because there is nothing to lose by experimenting, I would try the glue injection system with the largest hypodermic needle and syringe you can get (talk to a veterinarian). The glue would be injected from two or three spots and then use the rolling pin first going one way to get the most length of the bubble and then the other. Do not try going across the bubble because you'll only make it larger. This system should spread the glue as well as it ever could be spread, squeeze the excess out the holes made by the needle and then seal the holes with glue that didn't all come out. I've used this system on sheet vinyl a couple of days after it was laid and it worked. Because the adhesive used is very liquid, you have to lay paper towels over the whole area after you're done and then load it down with bricks or books or some such.
