I am trying to anchor a "sun shelter" into patio stones. I live in a very windy place and it is very sandy, so anchoring into the ground is not an option. I am drilling into 11/2 inch patio stones with a 1/2 drill bit and it is taking forever. I will put anchors into the holes if I can ever get them drilled. Is there some tip you can give me about the amount of pressure I should be using or something to help speed up the process?
Answer:
If the patio stones are just concrete, pressure you apply will not both it as long its sitting on a flat surface. If, on theother hand, they contain any form of re-enforcing bar, you may have toresort to a mallot driven concrete 'star chisel'. This is not something you'll want to be putting a lot of muscle into though. As soon as you feel you've gone through the metal, you should go back to the masonry bit. There normally is no more than one layer of re-enforcing - if its there atall and it may even be just chicken wire and you can go through that by applying more pressure on the masonry bit you started with.
