Question:

Last fall I had a furnace installed in the attic. (No basement, minimal crawl space). Previously I had a heat pump type heating and cooling system. My problem is related to the heat that is generated by the furnace in the attic. When it snows, and it did several times this past winter, the snow melts on the peak and runs to the eves where it re-freezes and forms ice dams which build up and up. Do you have any solutions? The contractor has not been very helpful despite several calls.

Answer:

I can suggest more insulation on the plenums and ducts in the attic and better soffit ventilation for the whole house. This, added to a baffled ridge vent running gable to gable should make a big difference.
