Expert Q
Question:
My father is having a new roof put on his house and would like your advice on continuous ridge venting. Here are some details: -The roof is 30 squares; -present ventilation consists of: two 16" whirly birds, one power vent (due to the age of this unit, it will be removed), one gable-end vent, several soffit vent openings. The gable style roof runs 63'. The roofer has said it would be better to replace the existing whirlies and power vent with a continuous ridge vent since the power vent makes the current configuration self-defeating. What is your opinion on a continuous ridge vent? Does it provide a superior level of ventilation to the configuration mentioned earlier?
Answer:
It is the best passive form of ventilation you can put on a roof. I've been promoting them for many years because they take advantage of some of the inalterable laws of physics - warm air rises, warm air under shingles cooks shingles, etc. My suggestion is go for it!
