Question:

I have a fifty year old 24 ft by 24 ft story and a half garage. There are living quarters upstairs with a 13 ft by 23 ft. room The rafters are 2X4 at 16" o. c. The sloped underside of the rafters is about 6 feet. I am planning to tack up 1 1/4" strips to each upper edge of the rafters and enclose the air space with 1/4" plywood. In order that I don't lose too much headroom, I am putting only an additional 1 1/2 inches to the underside of the rafters, giving me 3 1/2 inches for insulation. I am going to open the soffit and use aluminum vented. My question is: will the 1-1 /4" air passage be sufficient for ventilation?

Answer:

Even one inch would be enough as long as you have good soffit venting and a baffled ridge vent at the top of the roof.
