Question:

I'd like to put in a cellar in my basement, my question is about insulating the ceiling of the cellar. Do I staple the vapour barrier to the floor joist ( meaning down the side of the floor joist then up the floor joist across the floor then down the floor joist etc etc) then put bats of insulation in between the floor joist then cover it up plywood or drywall? Or do I put up the bats of insulation first then vapour barrier then ceiling. And do I insulate the concrete wall or leave them bare? I know about the two 4inch vents, four feet apart from your radio show.

Answer:

I would make the ceiling of the cold room a completely separate item. Drop it ten inches from the joists so you don't create a cold floor above it. Now you can insulate and VB as normal (VB goes on the heated side)and don' take the door to the floor either so its easier to insulate. That door, by the way, need be no more than 15 inches wide.
