Question:

I live in an apartment which only has two external air vents. At the moment one is hooked up to the half bathroom and the other to the dryer. Both ducts pass over the top of the stove; unfortunately the range hood is not vented outside. The stove is about 6 feet from the outside wall. I would like to know whether it is possible (from a building code point of view) to either combine the bathroom and dryer into the same duct, or to link the range hood into one or the other of them.

Answer:

I know nothing about building codes but I do know what functionality is. I would want that range vented and if possible, I'd like it to conform to this: In the interests of energy conservation, indoor air quality and occupant comfort, kitchen range hood fan ducting should be installed in such a way as to turn the metal ducting downward 90-degrees as it enters the perimeter wall cavity. After 15 to 18 inches, it must turn another 90-degrees to go outside. This ensures that because cold air will not migrate upward, it doesn't get fed back into the kitchen.
