Question:

Our nephew, a first time home buyer has been looking at houses in Hamilton (Ontario) where he works and wants to stay close to work; single guy with dog! He has 'fallen in love' with this house in an area he likes. Although it has appeal and charm, my husband, who has seen it, says it's a money-pit! Our nephew asked for my husband's opinion and is grateful for it but he is still 'drawn' to this little house. Did you say that a bank or trust company could recommend an independent inspector? Cost around $200.00? Any questions he should ask the guy before he hires him to inspect the property?

Answer:

Hopefully banks and trust companies can recommend building inspectors but he should be interviewing at least three of them anyway. I'd want to hire an inspector who was a renovations contractor for at least ten years and who is no longer contracting. I don't want an inspector who is in a conflict of interest and I want him to have had the experience of seeing work done by others.
