We recently purchased another home. It is a thirty five year old, three bedroom bungalow, with an almost finished basement. Has a humidifier on furnace (set between 30 - 40). Heavy musty odour in basement. Using a portable dehumidifier, and removed old carpet from rec. room. Have not lived here long enough to experience 'water problems' in basement. Were told through a Disclosure of Conditions Statement filled out by Vendor that one wall in basement had leaked, and was repaired through complete excavation along the wall, sand blasted and crack repaired with compound, then self-adhesive membrane rolled on, as well as new weeping tiles installed, sump pump repaired, and landscaping done with gravel graded away from the house. What suggestion can you make for improving air quality? Would something like air purification system be of help?
Answer:
Getting rid of all absorbent products (carpets, drywall, etc) down there and then ventilating will get rid of the mildew odour and no kind of filter will.
