Question:

I am a very lucky person as I have just purchased a nice 50 acre farm and the good part is my wife likes it. As with all new properties there is always something that needs fixing or changing. The basement has an outside entrance therefore it was used by the previous owners as their main entrance to the house , they had horses , the basement smells of horse with a medicinal smell thrown in , can I wash the walls and floor with a bleach solution then paint everything to get rid of the smell?

Answer:

I'd let it air for a while but before you do anything, you might want to find out what the medicine was and then talk to a good carpet cleaner in your area to determine what system will do away with it. After that, a good lysol wash should look after most, if not all of it. To keep the odours out of the living cavity, you might also want to seal (with caulking compound) all holes in the basement ceiling (wiring, plumbing, heating runs, etc.).
