I've just installed a hard wood floor. The floor was squeaking previously so when I removed the carpet, I added 3 inch screws every 3 inches. Installed dry sheeting (light cardboard material) on the floor then installed the hardwood perpendicular to the floor joists. Everything seemed OK until I reached the door area. When you exit the room, you hear the floor squeak and it sounds like metal as opposed to wood squeaking. The main beam is made out of laminated 2X8s with joist hangers holding the joists butted to the beam. There is a solid area which is the beam then a slope past the beam. Inspected the joists and some are shimmed in the metal brackets. I plan to build a wall in the basement directly beneath the problem area. I could place the wall just beneath where the floor joists butt to the main beam giving it additional support and could probably raise the doorway area upstairs.
Answer:
The only thing that will silence the metal hangers is more nails, or better yet, screws. Talcum powder silences only wood-on-wood squeaks.
