I am just starting to redue my basement. I have had some water in it when it rains hard and for a long period of time. Some have mentions I should put down a sub floor so water would not ruin my new carpet. Others have said that I would get a hollow sound...like a dance floor if I do this. And that the 2x4's might come loose after a period of time causing the floor to wobble. What do you think about installing a sub floor in a basement?
Answer:
As long as you have a water problem in there, the last thing you want is a sub-floor. One of the reasons I'm not in favour of them is exactly that. Should you get water in there, for no matter what reason, the sub-floor has to be torn out to get rid of the various kinds of mould and mildew that form in any unventilated area.
