Question:

Over recent years I am noticing a musty smell in my basement which I feel is getting progressively worse. (I live in a raised bungalow) About 20 years ago I put down a rubber foam backed carpet directly on the concrete floor. Could this be the cause?

Answer:

That's only part of the cause. The biggest problem is that you are not ventilating that area well enough. We don't have the number of windows in the basement that we do elsewhere and we don't have perimeter doors opening and closing to move air around. Usually, we just seal the whole thing up and atmospheric moisture has nowhere to go gut form into condensation and then mould. At least that's my theory. I know that a lot of people are happier when they take all that into account and provide more air movement down there.
