Question:

You have always talked about not installing insulation to the floor on a basement wall. Could you tell me why? How far from the floor should the insulation stop? Does this apply to any insulation, fiberglass, rigid foam, etc.?

Answer:

I leave insulation and vapour barrier up 8 to 12 inches from the floor to keep from creating too much condensation in that area. The other reason is that I want a little bit of heat loss at that level so the drainage tiles keep draining. I use only bat type insulation inside because anything else requires more precision in cutting than I am (or anyone else is) capable of.
