Top > Basement & Crawl Space > Drain

Question:

I have a noticeable sewer smell in my basement coming from the drain in the concrete floor. It is particularly strong after showering and such. I've also noticed that the concrete around the drain is starting to flake/crumble away. I have not been pouring anything miserable down the drain. What is causing this and how can I rectify the problem?

Answer:

First you check to see if the trap under your floor drain is retaining water. If it is not, you'll have to break up the concrete in that area and replace it. The sewer smell may not be as local as it seems to be.
