Top > Basement & Crawl Space > Drainage

Question:

We have a bungalow in the Pinecrest (Ottawa, ON) area. The problem we are haveing is water is coming out of our floor drain in the basement. In that room we have a shower, toilet and our washing machine. It seems to only happen in the summer and usually while we are doing a load of laundry in the washing machine. We tried to install a back up preventer but the hole is just under 3inches and we can not find one to fit.

Answer:

That back-up valve (preventer) may be more trouble than you think so its probably just as well you didn't find one. Your problem appears to be more with the soil pipe under the concrete slab floor than anything else. The obstruction preventing water from flowing out to the sewer is probably something caught in the joining of the basement drainage line to the main sewer (soil) pipe. You can rent a motorized snake with a claw on it and send it down beside or under the basement laundry tub to retrieve whatever it is.
