My son and daughter-in-law are finishing the family room in their basement and plan to carpet the room with a commercial berber carpet with a good under pad. Please confirm that your advice would be not to use an under pad but to lay (glue?) the carpet directly onto the (painted) concrete floor. I anxiously await your reply to pass it on to them before they make a final decision on carpeting.
Answer:
I constantly remind people that the key part of the word under pad is "Pad" and that means that it will soak up any form of moisture available. I know the warranty on the carpet is void if the pad isn't used but if there happens to be a moisture problem of any kind down there, the pad will have to be discarded anyway so I prefer not to waste the money.
