Question:

REN, ON TODAYS PHONE IN SHOW I ASKED YOU ABOUT BUILDING WALLS AROUND THE BOTTOM OF MY COTTAGE.THE COTTAGE IS 28 BY 32,6 FEET OFF THE GROUND IN THE FRONT AND ABOUT 1 FOOT IN THE BACK.I KNOW YOU CANT EXPLAIN EVERY DETAIL ON THE AIR AND THIS IS THE REASON FOR THIS E MAIL.YOU SAID TO USE H SLIDERS COMBINED WITH 2BY 4 WALLS FOR FRAMING. ON THE OUTSIDE PRESURE TREATED PLYWOOD FOR SKIRTING.I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW THE FRAMING IS ATTACHED OR HOW IT GOES TOGETHER.COULD YOU PLEASE DRAW ME A DETAILED DIAGRAM OF HOW THIS GOES TOGETHER. I WANT TO DO THIS PROPERLY AND THE LOCAL LUMBERYARD IS STEERING ME IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION. I KNOW YOUR TIME IS LIMITED BUT I APPRECIATE THIS GREATELY.

Answer:

Believe me, my artisitic abilities fall far short of even my verbal communications abilities. Build yourself a hanging frame of 2X4s. this frame comes down to within 3 or 4 inches of the ground. Now cover the exterior of it with PT plywood. On the outside of it, every 8' you attach (vertically) a 12-inch strip of 1X2 at the bottom and then over that, you attach a strip of 1X4 so the wall, the 1X2 and the 1X4 make a letter "H". You can now slip a 12-inch wide strip of PT plywood panel, 92 inches long into each of these. This panel slides up and down quite freely as frost heaves and retreats. You can insulate the inside with at least R-20 bats that are held in place by the 6mm poly you use for vapour barrier. Don't forget to also VB the dirt floor.
