Question:

The basement will be divided into various rooms. Building code says I have to take the heat venting down the walls to within 6" of the floor. How do I plan for cold air return? What would be necessary? Do I bring these to the floor too?

Answer:

I don't believe in The Code in this instance because it says nothing about return air grills in the basement. I make very sure that every room, particularly in the basement, is serviced by a return air duct because cold air is heavier than warm and falls to the basement floor. It can't go any farther so I make sure it is picked up and put back through the system.
