We have a 40 year old home with a very dry dirt floor crawl space. The perimeter of the wall is insulated and covered with a vapour barrier. The floor itself is covered with a vapour barrier. The crawl space houses the blower unit of the air conditioner and the ducts. When the house is closed for 3 to 4 days at a time, a distinct smell of the dirt floor is present. How can this be overcome? Please do not use this question on the air as we are about to enter a real estate transaction and we wish to solve this problem prior to the sale of the house.
Answer:
Ventilate the crawl space because the mildew you're smelling is in the wooden structural components so it's going to be there for a long, long time.
