We have noticed a smell of mildew coming from around our basement window . The house is 8 yrs old and its the first time we have had a problem such as this. We have a small water stain in the corner of the windown on the inside. My wife has been watering the flowers nightly and water does hit the window. I don't think the window leaks or I should say it does not appear to leak. I have dug down on the outside but everything appears to be good. Now that we have discontinued the watering and will monitor the inside of the window, will the smell of mildew dry up or do we have to remove the window and research out the cause of the smell. There is no evidence of water on the inside of the basement wall which is covered with insulation and panelling.
Answer:
That small wet spot in the corner will certainly cause wet wood and wet wood will mildew so your best bet is to dry things out and make sure you ventilate in that area.
