My mother lives in a wartime house and has recently had the basement leaks fixed. She does not have any heat going into the basement and the ceiling in the basement is not insulated. We are trying to convince her to turn on the heat vent into the basement to alleviate the problem of the damp-smell in her home. I either sneeze or get stuffed up and I feel the problem is caused from mold or mildew in her home.
Answer:
This does not make for a healthy situation. The mold and mildew spores being ingested by both occupants and visitors can be quite toxic and the way to get rid of them is to heat and ventilate.
