The deck was built in end June 2005 and end of July we bought a semi-transparent stain and cleaned the wood and applied 2 coats of the stain over two days. Summer was great. After the winter thaw, we noticed a lot of stain peeling in patches. Some areas are fine but in areas that its peeling, we can actually see the wood with no stain. Presently, we do not see the oily repelling ability of the stain when it rains.
Answer:
It would appear that the cedar was not dry enough to absorb the finish you applied. The stain sat on the surface and then peeled when frost hit moisture inside the wood. It will have to come off before you apply anything else.
In the interests of retaining credibility and in fairness to all, I cannot recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.
Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
