Expert Q
Question:
I was given a 3 foot drop leaf table that was scorched in a fire. About 2"x5" are scorched to a depth of about 1/16" - 1/8" on the top piece that doesn't fold down. Do I just scrape off the black burnt wood and then set-up the table and sand the drop leaves to "dip" where they meet the burnt wood piece? Is this much fussing worth it? This table has 8 turned legs. Because of the scorching I've had to remove the stain on the tabletop. What's the fastest way to clean the legs back to the bare wood, have it dip stripped? Doing it by hand with a brush is taking forever!
Answer:
You could tolerate the dip in the table surface or you could route out an appropriate depth to the precise size of a single ceramic tile and glue it in. You might even want to keep the tile a very little higher than the table surface so you have a hot pot holder. It s called turning a negative into a positive. For cleaning the legs there are bio-degradable strippers on the market that will take it down to original wood and then you can do with them as you please.
