Question:

1956 house, instructions on removing many layers of wax, then sanding, filling in 2mm gaps between squares and number of coats of varathane to be applied, and is sanding required between coats.

Answer:

Floor sanding is not a job for the novice because the machine eats a lot of wood really fast. Get a pro to do it and you can do the finishing yourself if you feel like it. My system is to sand, seal and finish. No matter how many coats you apply as a novice, you should at least lightly sand between coats. The container you get the various finishing products in will have instructions how now best to treat it.
