Question:

I live on some acreage south of Ottawa. Recently, we cut down a beech and a butternut that had been damaged in the icestorm. We have since had them cut into about 1" boards and are stacked, with spacers and weights in the garage. How long should it take to dry this lumber?
Also, My wife is thinking of major renovations in her kitchen in the spring and I think it would be good if we could use this wood for the new kitchen cabinets. What do you think?

Answer:

That lumber should be dry enough to use two years after you stacked it and although butternut is harder to work with, both are good for cupboards. Be prepared to do a lot of preparatory work with them though.
