Ren We bought rough cut red oak wood last fall that was cut in Sept. Right now it is stacked using spacers in between layers in the garage. If we brought some of the wood inside, cut it in 3"-4" strips would it dry faster? We are going to make kitchen cupboards doors with it. We were hoping to start to use it this summer if possible at all. What do you think our chances are of it being ready for use this July August time frame.
Answer:
For normal use, wood has to be off the stump and barked for at least a year no matter how you stack it. For cupboard doors on the other hand, you'll want it aging for at least two full years. If you use it too soon you'll end up with splits and twists that you might want to move from the kitchen to the family room fireplace. Oak is one of the best woods for heat.
