Our 20 year old, painted, wood garage doors need fixing up. The surface wood is peeling and beyond repair and it would need to be replaced. I cannot convince my husband to install cedar doors - he says we can replace the thin wood and stain it to look like cedar. What suggestions do you have on how to go about this - there are lacrosse balls, tennis balls, and basketballs being fired at these doors as well! Has the vinyl siding industry come out with anything that can be put on top of the wood panels to make them maintenance free.

So far you haven't mentioned Russian Thistle (or tumble weeds as they're called here) but with that kind of traffic, I think I'd give up the idea of thin plywood and go straight to a half-inch, good one side fir plywood to replace panels. These can be painted and they'll hold up quite well. Don't forget to paint both sides so moisture content from both sides is equal and they won't warp and rot.
