Question:

We have a cedar home which the woodpeckers have been enjoying. We have several places where sizeable cedar siding has actually been pecked away. We temprorarily have pieces of tin pie plates stapled to the holes to discourage the woodpeckers, which seems to have helped so far. What is the best way to repair the siding? Is there a wood filler type putty that can fill the holes and stained to match?

Answer:

About the only practical way to do the repairs is to use a hole saw to cut whatever sized holes you need to cover the unwanted ones and glue in a new piece of cedar with a good silicone caulking compound with a fungicide in it. That way you can often match the grain too.
