I recently bought a 27 yr old house, and am in the process of renovating. The stairs have carpet on them, what do I need to do to make them hardwood. The steps are made out of redwood and is in good shape.

You can lay hardwood right over them and where the spindles are, you either cut very carefully and fit the wood not in blocks as wide as the spindle, but in strips that are long enough to cap the whole wide of the treads.
