Question:

I have a curved staircase and the wall at the base of the stairs is curved too. The previous homeowner used the usual wood baseboard material but cut it in pieces and tried to caulk the joins. It's a mess! What
can I do to put a baseboard down that goes with the colonial style baseboard and 1/4 round on the other walls?

Answer:

This will depend very much on how thick the new baseboard is going to be. If it's pine and less than 3/4" thick, you can install it with no trouble at all as a 'green' strip so that when it dries, it already has the same configuration as the walls. If it is thicker, you'll use a 2-piece system. The thick stock will be "Kerfed" (cross cut part way through along the back)so it doesn't split when bending to conform to the walls. Along the top, you put on a 'crown' or smaller dimensioned trim piece to finish it off and cover the kerfing.
