We have just completed a very nice backyard project which includes a nice new western red cedar deck (28'x14'). I would like to know if I should be applying something to it. I do not want to ever stain the deck, but was wondering if I should be sealing it with a water seal, and if so, is there any length of time that I should be waiting because it is a brand new deck. Also, I would like to know what you would suggest we use to clean it - there's some dirt (sand/earth) that has ended up on it due to the construction and I'm wondering what should be used and how to apply some form of cleaner.

Construction dirt will soon wash off it with use but other than that, there isn't much you're going to do to cedar to add to its longevity. Every couple of years you might want to give it a treatment with a biodegrabeable wood wash and that's about it.
