We have a new (3 months) deck. Material is pressure treated, not cedar, I think it's spruce or fir? What is the recommended protection for pressure treated decks such as this and how important is it to know the exact type of wood?

The important thing to know is that it is pressure treated. That tells you that it doesn't need to be painted nor stained and if you want to clean it up every couple of years, you can pressure wash it with a bio-degradable product.
