Question:

I live in Brooklin Ontario a village north east of Toronto (about a 40 minute drive)I'd like to know if we can plan any spring bulbs now and have them bloom this spring? Also we are in a 4 year old home. Our neighbour though that he/we needed to throw dirt down in the fall so our grass would have better/stronger roots. There was no seeding done. Now of courses we both have a lawn of mud. It looks awful, any suggestions/ideas. Should we reseed or just wait it out? Any idea how long it will take to get grass?

Answer:

The bulbs, I think, are out of the question in many cases but there are some that might work. Your local nursery will be able to recommend the best possibilites to you. The top dressing of the lawn was a good idea and if you had grass there last fall, and put down a half inch or so of soil, it should come back much nicer than the way you left it. Deeper soil as top dressing may cause things to smother and die.
